Well, we just arrived in The Island of Dominica!  The first anchorage is Portsmouth, we grabbed a mooring ball due to the depths here.  After Dave returned from checking us in we decided to go in for a bite to eat.  Unfortunately since it was a Sunday, the Quarantine office was closed so we were not allowed to bring the dogs ashore.  After having a bite to eat and checking out the area we decided that in the morning we would move onto the capital city Roseau.  The anchorage was pretty rolly here and we would have better luck getting the dogs admitted to the island in the capital.

Roseau

Got up and sailed down to Roseau.  We contacted a guy named Marcus on the VHF to get a mooring ball.  He met us at a ball and helped us tie up.  The weather is not great to continue on so we will be here for the week, with hopes to leave on Saturday.  After getting situated we headed in to find the quarantine office to get the dogs admitted.

Unfortunately, as we walked around the town heading to the quarantine office we saw a lot of very unwell or sick stray puppies.  This concerned us so we decided no to bring the pups ashore.  We weren’t sure we could get them admitted anyway and after seeing the state of the pups on the island we decided not to try.

Bumming around

While we were here we decided it was time to knock out some boat projects.  One of them was getting the hull cleaned.  Dave usually does it but we decided it would be nice to give the locals some work as they are really struggling after hurricane Irma.  A couple guys came and cleaned the hull and did a great job.  One afternoon we blew up the paddle board for the first time and got the pups on it.  Izzy was more of a fan than Sadie.  I was able to paddle around with her for quite a while.  Sadie got on and got off it rather quickly.  It was just great to get them in the water playing around.  We also did a bit of our own relaxing as well.

Dominica has a history museum in Roseau so we decided to check it out.  It was a nice little museum packed full of information and air conditioned.  We also checked out a couple restaurants. One of our favorites was La Petite Paris, quaint delicious French restaurant.  Her pizza was absolutely fantastic.  I know they aren’t a French island but we couldn’t help ourselves she had pizza for a great price. Oceans Edge was a local restaurant that had really good local food.

Well, our weather window has opened up.   Tomorrow we head to Martinique.  Can’t wait it is another island I have wanted to see for a long time.

Cheers,

Jill
